Vitamin E is chemically known as Tocopherol and they are needed by human for essential functions, i.e. absence or insufficient intake result in deficiency symptoms and ultimate death.

Vitamin E are not synthesized, therefore it must be supplied on a regular basis via diet, but it is difficult to get high levels of vitamin-E from a typical diet, although it’s mainly found in vegetable oils:

  • sunflower;
  • soybean;
  • rapeseed;
  • almonds;
  • nuts or olives fat and caloric food.

Vitamin E was discovered in 1922 by Herbert Evans and Katherine Bishop, researchers at the University of California, as part of a study on green leafy vegetables. Today, research shows that the powerful benefits of vitamin E extend virtually from head to toe.

About 8 Tocopherol have been identified and Alpha Tocopherol is most Active.

The Tocopherol are derivatives of 6-hydroxy chromane (tocol) ring with isoprenoid side chain. The antioxidant property is due to the chromane ring.
